Early Iron was born as 4 Guys Insane in Dec 1977. This is the only
picture ever taken that first year. Wasn't I Cute?
Details: Guitars are notebook card
board taped to toothpicks. The drums
are also notebook card board with
tape at the seams and the cymbals are
flat. The keyboards where much the
same. The amps are two transistor
radios tuned to the same station. It did
make sound at least. The mains are
funny to look at. Hey, I was 12!
Here are second and third generation pictures. By the third
generation things are starting to look more realistic.
Details: This would be a year or so
later. Things haven't changed much
but I've built cabinets out of cardboard
and tape. There's also some light
rigging and the keyboard player in now
playing guitar.
Details: This would be another couple
years later. In a horrible canoe
accident, Hawk, the original guitar
player, drowned and was never found.
This caused a major line up change.
The Bass and Drummer changed
places, keyboards are back and a new
guitar player is added. At this time full
dimension guitars are added. The
speakers also work. I think there are a
string of xmas lights in the overhead.
In the late 80's the 4 Guys Insane was disbanded and reformed as
Early Iron. In the late 90's after a reinventing themselves again
they broke out into stadiums! Okay they moved to a much bigger
stage with much better everything. This is generation four.
Now doesn't that look much cooler! Here's some more pictures and better details
The Stage is now 2' x 4', carpeted, 6 loud speakers powered by an old Pioneer
receiver. There are over 500 feet of xmas lights either in the floor or over head.
The Guitarist has several full
feature guitars including an
acoustic which is hollow. Two of
the guitars have trem bars and
one has a pick guard, it's on the
riser just in the top left corner.
The pedal board is the base of a
match book with cut matches
painted as pedals. He has a Dean
Markley full stack with his Strat
leaning against it behind the
keyboards.
The Bassist plays this bass which
resembles a Buzzard, he has a
Jazz, and Ric laying on the drum
riser. His amp is a Peavey with a
2x15 cabinet. The head is a road
case style explaining the silver
around the front. Note that both
guitar players had their left hand
cut off and reattached with wire so
they hold the necks correctly.
The Keyboardist has exploded with
changes. He now wears a black
jump suit with the Early Iron logo.
Better still, look at those keys!
They're made of balsa wood
carved to shape and then real
keyboard graphics were added.
The stands are hanger wire bent
to shape and glued into grooves in
the keyboard bottoms. This picture
doesn't capture the detail they
really have. The guitar rig and
guitars are also seen.
Here's the Drummer up close. The
cymbals are now conical and gold.
The drum shells are still notebook
cardboard but completely covered
in masking tape which provides
their color. This set is very old
and the heads are looking bad but
the effect is still very nice. Now the
only piece stuck through the riser
is the snare as I can't get a stand
in there with his legs. I don't have
the heart to alter his legs to have
him sit correctly. It's cool as is.
The Blue and Gold Guitars here
are the ones in the 3rd generation
pictures and are the oldest pieces
left besides the musicians.

look at his keys.

silly film of them playing!!
